Leading Environmental Groups Denounce Misleading, Chevron-Funded Recall Petition

Fullerton, CA – Sierra Club California and the California League of Conservation Voters (CLCV) joined together today to denounce the costly and misleading recall petition aimed at State Senator Josh Newman. The leading environmental organizations warned voters not to sign the petition being funded by corporate polluters Chevron.

“Chevron gave $500,000 to the [California Republican Party], presumably to help pay petition circulators to gather signatures to qualify the recall,” the Sacramento Bee reported.

Just months after Senate District 29 voters chose to send Josh Newman to the California State Senate, politicians from outside the district have teamed up with the Chevron-funded California Republican Party on a dishonest campaign that is lying to voters about the recall petition. Hundreds of voters signed the petition after being informed it would lower their taxes, and have since asked to have their names removed when they realized they had been deceived by the Chevron-funded campaign and its signature gatherers.

“Chevron couldn’t give a hoot about taxpayers of District 29; in fact this costly and dishonest recall would waste $3 million in taxpayer dollars that would be better spent on keeping our parks clean and safe,” said Margee Hills, Sierra Club political committee. “Senator Newman went to Sacramento to fight for his constituents against these special interest tactics, and we’re outraged, but not surprised, that Chevron would fund an effort to fool voters like this.”

“In just seven months, Senator Newman has sided time and time again with the people of his district against large special interests like Chevron,” said California League of Conservation Voters CEO Sarah Rose. “That’s why Chevron gave a stunning $500,000 toward efforts to recall Senator Newman and to undermine the will of Senate District 29 voters. We’re standing behind Newman and his efforts to protect our air and water, and warning voters that this huge corporate polluter is trying to buy this election.”

Sierra Club California is the legislative and regulatory advocacy arm of the 13 Sierra Club chapters in California, representing more than 400,000 members and supporters statewide. The California League of Conservation Voters (CLCV) is the political muscle of the environmental movement in America’s leading environmental state, and is the nation’s oldest grassroots environmental political action organization.

Sierra Club California and the California League of Conservation Voters (CLCV) are the latest in a long line of organizations joining together with numerous elected officials and community leaders from across Senate District 29 to oppose the recall campaign.
